The morning was soothingly quiet, fresh air filled the young apprentice's lungs as he made his way out of the den. Taking a moment to stretch out the drowsiness out of him, he shook away last night sleep. Already a quarter-moon through Newleaf, Ripplepaw made sure to enjoy every second of it. Scents of growing plants and the ample growth of new prey was a good sign the clan was going to be well fed and taken care of. To compliment the abundance of prey, the sky shone with such beauty, it made every clan cat glow with energy.
Ripplepaw took a moment to admire the scenery. He watch as already woken clan members were up and about; doing duties or taking care of the new set of litters Newleaf brought to them. It was quite exciting. The young apprentice purred in content, it was completely peaceful. Who could not enjoy such a lovely and peaceful day, unfortunately, the apprentice had some training to do. His mentor had made it clear, Ripplepaw was to train his swimming skills. It was true, Riverclans were not afraid of water and were the best swimmers. But, Ripplepaw, had a hard time overcoming the fear. It was the only reason he'd sink in when trying to paddle.
A slight breeze picked up, ruffling the tom's pelt. It felt as if the wind knew Ripplepaw needed some comfort, because after the breeze had caress the tom's pelt all tension had disappeared. Unsheathing his claws, he dug his claws upon the soil, kneading it slightly. It was one of his old habits as a kit. Before he'd begin his day, he'd thank Starclan by acknowledging the soil beneath him. Not to mention, it was a way for him to concentrate.
After doing his routine, he padded away, tail held high with pride. The breeze brought with it the promise of prey. From mice, to shrews and water voles. Not to mention, the streams were surely to be rich with juicy fish. The various scents of the forest were greeted by Ripplepaw's purrs. He allowed the wind to caress his neck, greeting it like an old friend. It was sure to turn out to be a perfect day. Already at the east side stream, he sat before the constant stream. Across the river, and beyond the brave and loyal Thunderclan reside. His fur prickled with an unknown emotion-- anticipation? fear? excitement? He wasn't quite sure.
The cat froze when a large size fish came out from the stream. It flew through the wind and back into the stream, splashing the water. Drops of water soaked an unamused Ripplepaw, eyes glared at the now gone fish. "Mouse-brained fish...." mew the tom cat as he stood up and shook away all stress. His tail sway side to side. "Come on.....let's get this over with....." meowed the apprentice, staring at his own deformed reflection in the water stream. His concentration was all directed to the moving water. His paw dipped half way into the cool water. The scents around him mingled together, making it easy for anyone passing by to approach him like a shadow.

Two cats sat close together, chatting about nothing in particular. Their voices disappeared and mixed within other noises that filled Riverclan. In a glace you'd miss so much. A small apprentice or kit seeking off into the territory, a warrior coming back from a hard day and going into her den or even a beautiful she-cat padding into the main area. A golden and brown tabby with yellow eyes. She didn't do much in particular, moving within the sea of body like a fish. Not bothering a soul that was to busy to move out of her way. She was like a ghost that was invisible to everyone else until she'd jump up and say 'Boo'.
Mothpaw sighed and walked over to the fresh-kill pile. Her eyes found their way to a small mouse that was off-colored. She quietly picked it out from around the fish and other creatures. Taking it in her jaw and quietly slipping out of camp. She liked the peacefully-ness that filled the wooded area. It was as if no cat had stepped on the land before, yet she knew her clan and warriors before her had traveled this path many times before. She let her mind wonder as her paws took over the way. Her mentor had given her a few simple tasks to do today. Not much, and it wouldn't take her long at all. She could take some time to herself to have breakfast.
As the river appeared before she breathed in it's cold vapors. The smell of fish and the feeling of the cold water washed over her. She closed her eyes and smiled; or the best she could with a mouse in her jaw. She jumped up upon a large rock and dropped the mouse in front of her. Sitting and thanking Starclan for her meal. She was happy that Riverclan usually always had food to go around and unlike other clans didn't starve in the cold moons.
As she laid, eating her mouse and watching the water flow over the rocks, a tom appeared from the pathway she had taken and walked up to the water. Ripplepaw, he was an apprentice in her own clan. Mothpaw wasn't one to have many friends, or even friends at all. She watched him quietly, laying down on the rock, she wasn't well hidden but he didn't seem to glance around himself. A fish took flight in the air and splashed him, which only made him mad. She laughed, but quieted herself. "Come on... let's get this over with.." His voice made her ears perk up and she watched as he placed his paws into the water.
Mothpaw was one who hated fighting and hunting. Hated the training that went with it and hated doing the actions. Yet the river calmed her. She didn't have to worry about tripping over her own paws or making noise. She was a natural swimmer and could quietly paddle around in the cool water. So she couldn't help but giggle at his hesitation of getting into the water. She thought that all Riverclan cat could swim and would never be afraid of water. Her giggle was loud, but she couldn't help it. He probably heard her but oh well.

The tom cat stared as his paw created individual waves around it. The ripples in the water were quite entertaining, reminding him of his own markings. If mother knew.... thought Ripplepaw to himself. Among all the other cats, his mother along with other warriors were the best swimmers in the camp and this made him completely self conscious. Surely she would be ashamed of him. The tom cat let out a frustrated breath, withdrawing his paw from the ever so moving water. It was while retrieving his paw back that he caught a lovely sound, a giggle. This, unfortunately took him by surprise. Ripplepaw did not know how it happened. But while trying to look for the source of the sound, he abruptly placed his paws a bit too close by the edge of the river and lost his footing, sliding into the water, face first.
It was quite amusing from an outside view. His tail stuck up in the air, tail swooshed alarmed by the sudden happenings. Hind high up in the air, head deep in the water and fishes surrounding him, Ripplepaw attempted to move back. Only to fail, and having no other choice, threw himself in the water and began to paddle for his life. An awkward meow escaped him. He coughed out water that had slid through his nose . He neared in the edge, and pulled himself out, trembling from shock and panic. The tom cat coughed once more, breathing in deep. His whole body was now soaked, fur hugged his skin as he sat. The event had washed away what had caused it and remembering it, he stood up in alert and searched his surroundings.
Ripplepaw sniffed the air, but before he caught scent of her, his eyes laid upon a she-cat. She was laying upon one of the large rocks, giggling herself. What an embarrassment, Ripplepaw had given this she-cat a show to remember for all of her life. The tom cat recognized her; an apprentice, just like him. He didn't know much about her, he'd usually find her quiet and reserve. While he was more out and open, of course, to a degree. Embarrassed and humiliated, Ripplepaw gave out a huff. "I was just doing some training...." he meowed, trying to recover himself miserably. His ears moved to the side. If he had been a kit, he surely stick his tongue at this she-cat. But, that was childish and he was to become a warrior. Turning his back on the she-cat, he decided to ignore her existence and continue practicing. He couldn't stop just to avoid being the laugh stock of the clan. Ripplepaw was going to show them all he could be the best swimmer there was. Or....at least he was going to attempt.

Mothpaw did not mean to frighten the tom, yet it so happened she did. She watched as his paws slipped farther into the water till the water was up over his head, his tail high in the air. She could only chuckle more. For Starclan's sake he looked like a duck! She rolled on her side in a fit of giggles, laughing at the poor tom who was now paddling around in the water. Well at least he knew the basics of swimming. He didn't drown from his slip in the water. She coughed and stifled her laughter. Calming herself down so he would not get too embarrassed.
He was soaking wet by the time he found his way out of the water. His fur dripping with water. She felt a wave of guilt wash over her as his eyes found her up on her rock. She moved back to a laying position and bit her tongue. "I was just doing some training." He said to her. She tilted her head, his mentor must have known he didn't like water much and sent him out here to get over that. She wondered why his mentor wasn't out here with him, talking him through the process. Though maybe getting over it was a personal thing and his mentor thought he needed to do it by himself.
She didn't like making people mad or anything like that. He looked very unhappy and turned back around towards the water. She stood up and hesitated. He probably wanted to be left alone.. yet she should probably say sorry first. Mothpaw jumped from her perch. Landing awkwardly on her feet and padded over to the edge of the water. He had turned his back to her and she still felt horrible bad. "I didn't mean to frighten you and make you fall into the water," She mewed. "I'm really sorry."
She stuck her paws into the water and looked over at the soaking wet tom. "I'm really good at swimming." She said softly. She wasn't bragging, just stating the fact. "Though on land, I always trip over my feet and make noise. Hunting and fighting isn't fun for me at all." She looked away, her eyes focusing on the fish under the water. She couldn't even caught the poor creature if she tried. "Everyone has their weaknesses." She got to her feet. Figuring he wanted to be alone. She turned to pad away.

Ripplepaw stared at the clear current, as though that would help him with his weakness. It's not as though the water could do any harm. Not if he knew how to control his fear and swim properly. It was all a matter of control. The tom cat pondered, lost in deep thought. Before he decided to get himself wet again, he laid upon the soaked ground and tried to think about why he feared the water. A gentle breeze from the east picked up, caressing the wet tom cat. Ripplepaw shivered in response, it wasn't uncomfortable for him but his body hadn't expect it. His tail wrapped around his side. His ears perked up at the sounds of paw steps coming closer. He knew there was no danger but even so, he turned his head around to face the she-cat.
If it weren't for the incident he'd surely find her attractive, even with her awkward large ears-- they reminded him of mice ears. This force him to choke out a laugh, causing him to close his green orbs shut. All tension dissolved, muscles loosened up and an old Ripplepaw was back. The charming friendly tom cat. Poor Mothpaw, his green eyes observed as she stumbled over her words. She looked hesitant and shy, it was quite amusing and in an adorable way. Mothpaw reminded him of a vulnerable kit, surely this was not good for an apprentice.
The scent of fresh prey mingle into his nostrils, the fishes were not the only prey around and this cause his belly to rumble. Already, he was starving. Not a good sign, he hadn't even started his training properly. The previous events must of sped the process. The glowing, fiery rays of the sun penetrated through the coming clouds and onto both cats. It felt nice to feel the warm rays of the sun upon his blazing pelt. "I didn't mean to frighten you and make you fall into the water," sound came from the she-cat, her almond color eyes looked over with an apologetic glance. "I'm really sorry." she finally mew to him.
Ripplepaw moved his body, crawling to face her at an awkward angle. He studied her closely, listening, and casually grooming his forepaw. Tilting his head to the side, he watched as she stuck her paws into the water. The water around her paw made the same rings from before. He straightened his pose when she looked over. "I'm really good at swimming." mew Mothpaw, it was quite hard to pick her inaudible meow but caught it otherwise. If it had been some other cat, surely they'd be offended and taken aback by her words. Instead, Ripplepaw listened without interrupting the female cat. "Though on land, I always trip over my feet and make noise. Hunting and fighting isn't fun for me at all." A miserable expression was upon the apprentice features as she eyed the water with no desire. "Everyone has their weaknesses." finished Mothpaw and with that she began to make her way. He figured to give him some space.
The tom cat stood quickly, shaking his pelt and trotted towards the she-cat. "Where you think you're going Mouse-ear?" inquired the smiling cat, a charming aura surrounded him as he blocked her path. "The least you could do now is keep me company. If you have nothing better to do. Plus, I think I just got used to having you around." meowed Ripplepaw with a short purr as he walked past her, rubbing his head against her side. "For a second there, I thought you had no voice. Usually you are so quiet, by the way. If you're so good at swimming why don't you show me." challenged the tom at, turning to face her from behind her, his tail swayed towards the stream, gesturing her.

Mid-stride, the she-cat was cut off by Ripplepaw. His name really did fit him. His golden pelt glimmered in the sun and the black markings along his pelt looked like the water when you dipped a paw into it. "Where you think you're going Mouse-ear?" He asked. She looked at him questionably. Mouse-ear was defiantly not her name. She wasn't even a warrior yet! He should have know that. Then again, she was like a shadow, like any cat would have noticed her before. She sighed and glanced over at the tom, stopping and sitting on the ground. "My name is Mothpaw not Mouse-ear."
"The least you could do now is keep me company. If you have nothing better to do. Plus. I think I just got use to having you around." Mothpaw was surprised. She wasn't expecting the tom to invite her to stay. She barely talked to other cats.. let alone toms. Yes, she stumbled over her words but she had said a lot to him today. She bit her tongue, not sure whether to make up an excuse and leave or to stay. She didn't want to embarrass herself. Then again, he was the one afraid of water and then fell in it.
She felt him rub against her and the soft purr escaped from his muzzle. She froze and got really warm. If you could see her cheeks, she would have been bright red. She didn't know what to do now. Oh gosh, how does one react to such an act? Friendly? More than friendly? She swallowed and smiled softly, her eyes then found her paws. "For a second there, I thought you had no voice. Usually you are so quiet, by the way. If you're so good at swimming why don't you show me."
She glanced up at him and then the water. It playfully lapped the banks and shimmered. She didn't really have anything better to do.. so why not stay a while and have fun? She never got to have fun, defiantly when her mother was around. She took a deep breath and the cool air filtered through her mind. Calming and relaxing her. She wanted to be quiet, peaceful.. graceful.
Nodding at the tom she jumped to her feet and padded over to the water. Slowly dipping her paws into the river. She walked out into till it was touching her belly. Her eyes scanned the water for anything dangerous. She didn't want to get near any fast moving water, for it'd sweep her away in a second without any warning. She smiled and jumped the rest of the way in, her paws softly paddling around. Mothpaw swam to the middle, turning around and smiled at the tom. "See it isn't that bad!" she yelled over to him.

_____________________ Sweeping his clear steady gaze over the camp, Hailstar watched with a quiet pride as his warriors moved about, doing the tasks given. It had been peaceful in Riverclan lately, which was something he was keenly aware would not always last. Sighing to himself, he spotted something of interest and jumped down from his perch at the willow tree where he addressed the clan. The long haired silver cat made his way out of the camp after the some what hesitant looking tom he was currently apprenticing, Ripplepaw. The young cat had promise, and a good heart, but he needed to learn the most basic thing a Riverclanner was known for, Swimming. Hailstar could see the fear in the tom's eyes, and knew that in order to ensure that Ripplepaw be able to support the clan some day as a successful warrior he needed to learn it.
He had kept a careful and well eyed distance from Ripplepaw as he made his way down to the streams, it wasn't hard since his apprentice tended to keep his thoughts on where he was going and not what was going on around him. Something that while it wasn't a fault completely, would need to be addressed. Knowing when to leap from danger unexpectedly and keeping your ears alert was a good trait to master. He almost purred when another apprentice Mothpaw demonstrated the concern for needing to keep an eye on your surroundings to Ripplepaw the hard way when she sat near him and startled him.
Hailstar laughed seeing Ripplepaw miss his footing and go floundering straight into the water of the stream. His apprentice made a great fuss over landing in the water, splashing about awkwardly like he was about to drown. Apparently Mothpaw found it funny as well, for she tried to hide her snickering and then was about to leave at the retort from Ripplepaw. Hailstar silently praised his apprentice for asking for help from Mothpaw, but Hailstar had seen enough, and was about to get involved in the training of the two youngsters. Mothpaw's technique though much better then Ripplepaw's could use more fine tunning and Ripplepaw would need loads of encouragement from his new friend.
Leaping over the bank he had been sitting on he raced down to the water's edge, his muscles shimmering under his puffy coat. " Still not going well Ripplepaw? Mothpaw good of you to speak up, though sadly its to snicker at your clanmate, perhaps you had both better work together hmm. Never forget you both will grow up together, and your both Riverclan, you need to learn to work as a team. Ripplepaw enter slowly so that your in the shallows first then start paddling and lift your front paws off the banks to start. Once you feel confident strike out with your back paws and keep the movement going. Mothpaw lets see your diving." He sat not needing to repeat himself, he stood ready to dive in and help if needed.

It was too rich not to snicker at the she-cat's response to the nickname he gave her. But she had a point, that was not proper of him to call her so and in return, he gave her an apologetic nod. A sudden breeze tickled the insides of his ears, causing them to twitch and fold to the side. His pelt already dried appeared fluffier then before, well, more so ruffled up. Of course, if he were in camp, he'd definitely groom his pelt to it's gorgeous state but why bother, if he was still in training. A paw was placed before the other as he moved closer, observing Mothpaw. He could sense she was gathering herself by the way she carried herself; confident, graceful and silent in her steps. This amused him so, especially with those massive paws of her. It just did not suit her posture, yet she manage to somehow gather confidence in herself to do so.
Ripplepaw watched quietly, with an impressed expression as she headed into the moving stream. The tom cat chuckled, watching as the water washed away gently, moving in such a playful manner that reminded him of kits. He padded closer to the edge, not too close as before but enough to see through the clear water. The tom cat sat, kneading the floor with his tail wrapped around him securely. Sometimes, it felt as though his tail could protect him from much harm, even if it was more so an illusion. His dull green orbs stare intently at the she-cat. She was now completely at the streams mercy, well, not entirely. But her body was inside. The coloring in his eyes become golden with a spark of excitement.
He stood, pacing back and forth, tail swaying side to side. "See it isn't that bad!" Ripplepaw heard her call over. It was easy, well, she made it look so easy. This frustrated the cat; why couldn't he have her courage? Eyes were fix upon her legs, watching the way her paws interacted with the water and the outcome. Ripplepaw appeared to move into the water, but hesitated, backing up and staring at the sweeping current. It felt like he had sprung roots from his paws and were completely attached to the soil. Out of the blue, his fur stood on it's end as he caught a new scent. It wasn't a dangerous one, but it cause him to be fully aware. His mentor was behind him-- he mumbled something under his breath as Hailstar, their leader, began to speak.
It didn't take long, he was already on their tails and instructing them. Ripplepaw was glad he caught everything he had said. Knowing it would be a shame if he had to repeat himself and would just be an embarrassment for himself as well. It felt as though the roots that sprung from his paws were shredded away, whether from fear of him or of disappointing, he was not sure but the minute Hailstar finished his sentence he did as told. The tom cat dipped his average size paw inside the cool water. Shivering, he made sure to go all the way and was cautious about his steps, avoiding a repeat of the previous event. He held his tail high, avoiding having it completely submerge. Ripplepaw balanced himself, raising one paw off the bank as told. Letting out a small breath, he began to paddle. His hind legs pushed, aiding the movement of his front legs. It was rather amusing to watch Ripplepaw paddle. His legs were angled awkwardly as he attempted to paddle the correct way. The poor apprentice looked like a cripple frog swimming in the water, even in the shallow part.

Mothpaw watched the tom with a smile. She could feel pride swell in her chest. She could actually show off some. Most other apprentices could swim just as well as her if not a bit better. Yet this tom could barely get into the water. It wasn't as if she was making fun of him, after all he was the one who asked her to show him her swimming skills anyways. No, it was more as if he was practicing hunting and fighting and she was watching. It was easier watching your peers, who aren't such a high level in the task your doing, then warriors who already perfected their skills after moons of training.
Mothpaw's eyes lingered to the river floor. She noticed the brown colored rocks and the soft moss that grew over them. Wondering how they got there. The bank of the river was muddy earth, not rocks. So how was the whole floor covered in them? They didn't seem to move and seemed to have been there for lifetimes. It was a bit amazing how they were just.. there. She also noticed the small dark figured that danced under her. Fish, the word popped into her mind almost as a reflex. The taste of their cool skin filled her mouth, but she knew these fish were to small to catch. She glanced up at Ripplepaw, slightly letting her body float in the cool water. She wasn't sure what he was thinking, it was hard to tell. He watched her and didn't say a word. It made her a bit uneasy not being able to read him.
His movement was awkward around the water. A slight step or two forward and then falling backwards as if he was being dragged back on land. Maybe he was actually afraid of the water itself. Kits were always being told the dangers of the water. How cats had been swept off their feet in seconds, never to be seen again. Yet Mothpaw knew now that only happened when you found yourself in fast moving water. You just had to watch where you paddled too.
Mothpaw noticed Ripple tense up. Maybe he was getting ready to actually get into the water. Building up the confidence to realize the water isn't after all that bad. She smiled at him encouragingly, yet he was distracted. She felt confused, watching the tom say something. Her smile faded as she leaned in a bit. Trying to hear his words, yet all she could hear was the water murmuring under her.
Mothpaw lets see your diving."
Mothpaw felt her body freeze, the words defiantly did not come from Ripplepaw. Her eyes slowly moved upward to see a silver tom. Closing her eyes and sighed under her breath, trying to relax herself. It wasn't the best time to freeze up, not in front of your leader. "I'm s-sorry" She choked out. Her legs felt as if they were about to fall off and she just wanted to curl up under a rock. Ripplepaw must have noticed his mentor behind him before he spoke. No wonder he was so tense. Having their leader as a mentor? That had to be rough.
Mothpaw watched as Ripplepaw almost jumped into the water. Doing as his mentor told him. She felt bad for him all of the sudden. Guilt washed over her as he moved about in the water, and when she said moved.. it was more like squirmed. He looked like a dying fish on land. Flopping all over the place and splashing the water around. She wanted so badly to comfort the tom.. to say something that'd make him feel more confident but Hailstar was also lecturing her on how to swim. She looked up at him, 'What was it he asked me to do?' The thoughts lingered in her head. She got so distracted, so easily. She crinkled her nose, trying to remember what the tom had said.. Oh! That's right, diving!
She moved around so she was in a bit deeper part of the water. Taking a deep breath. She had seen cats dive before but never tried it on her own. It didn't look too difficult but she couldn't know until she tried. She looked down at the depths of the river. Well here goes all or nothing. She let her head dip under the water and let her paws follow. Paddling slightly with her front but she could just feel her butt in the air. Her tail up in the air.

He watched as Ripplepaw practically flung himself into the water at his insistence and sort of felt bad for the tom. Hailstar hadn't meant for him to act reckless, just to get over his fear and enter the water without flailing like a fish. It was a terrible thing for a Riverclanner to not be able to use the skills learned through fishing and swimming as it set them apart from the other clans. Fish were part of what made there pelts so slick and ,made it hard for clans to grabs hold of them. While he had heard from other cats that there fishy scent was repelling, which he found humorous, it was also what kept the scent of the moor and the forest off there fur. Besides it was nice to know that his clan had a better chance of surviving floods and other such dangers from the knowledge they gained in there early moons training as an apprentice, and he would be shamed if Ripplepaw failed to learn the methods that every riverclanner learned.
His gaze shifted to narrow on Mothpaw, the small she cat seemed to cringe when he had arrived. That had him feeling hurt ironically, its not like he wanted to be feared in the clan, respect yes, but never fear. It wasn't in his nature to harm anyone he had sworn to protect. Maybe i'm just making her nervous or something? He remembered a time when he was younger and had to please his mentor, while the leader then had watched him closely. It was stressful, but the things he had learned were so valuable he would never take any of it back. His white front paws kneaded the ground pulling up the small pebbles that lined the shore as he thought of the cat he had named Mothpaw's mentor. Burningpatch was a wily one during the best of days. Hailstar had hoped that the little apprentice would draw out her mentor as much as his skills would shape her. He could see that she was already very talented, perhaps a little shy but defiantly concerned for her own success. He was glad that he had taken it upon himself to train Ripplepaw. Had he been given a warrior like Burningpatch as a mentor then the poor tom would have simply been tossed in the water instead of being lead in to it like Hailstar was allowing him to.
He watched as they both practiced and Ripplepaw floundered around, while Mothpaw began to dive. Her form was unsteady, and his was well.... at least he was actually in the water. Hailstar considered that a small victory in itself. Stretching out his limbs, he entered the stream and glided smoothly into the center of the pool. " Okay so now that your paws are wet. Lets try a small exercise that should greatly improve your movement in the water." He looked at them both before continuing. Quickly his head disappeared and he dove to the bottom, his paws not making more than a ripple or two as he disappeared. At the bottom he grabbed something in his jaws and broke the surface of the water to grin revealing a small snail shell in his jaws. Letting it go and allowing it to fall back down into the riverbed, he spoke again to them." You must dive down and retrieve as many snail shells as you can, but you can only get one at a time. After you get one you have to lay them out in separate piles on the shore." He gave no mention of when they were to stop, but he didn't intend to. Wading back to the shore he climbed out and turned to watch them, his blue eyes glistening.
