_____________________ Sweeping across the moor Soaringpaw dashed using her long limber body to pick up speed easily. She could feel her toes curling into each foot hole in the ground only to spring away to the next and it was exhilarating. Today was a special day for her, since it was her second day as an apprentice and yesterday she had been out exploring the territory with her mentor the deputy of Windclan Eagleflight. She was so excited, with him being deputy that meant that she would learn a ton of things and that he was experienced. She had no clue that it wasn't her thirst for knowledge that had landed him as her mentor, but her knack for getting into trouble, and her overly energetic nature. Sure she was a bright young cat, but like most apprentices she was quicker about where she was going rather then what was going on along the way.
Her tail whipped around, streaking I the wind as she turned widely nearly falling into a rabbit hole. Rabbit hill was where they were training today, and Eagleflight and her were to start bright an early. She had barely slept even with the long treck through the territory the day before, she had been wide awake and her sister Daypaw had swatted her before crashing in her own nest. She never really thought her chattering was a problem and resented those that didn't enjoy a good friendly conversation.
Grinning she looked ahead, as she had rarely looked elsewhere the entire journey, and that included down. That soon became her downfall literally as her paw caught a rabbit hole that was slightly hidden in the grass, and hard to see. Tumbling foreword and rolling to a stop she landed in a heap of dirt. Ironically a rabbit happened to be in the hole nearest her face and it blinked at her, and dashed off, while she lay trying to figure out which way the sky was and if she was still falling.

Eagleflight calmly watched Soaringpaw sweep with Windclan speed along the imperfect hill, scored with the homes of many prey. The tall tom remembered being assigned to the young, energetic she-cat. Sparrowstar assigned Soaringpaw to him in hopes he could take reign of the the orange patched apprentice. Shaking his head to himself, Eagleflight chuckled. Reigning this cat with what seemed like endless energy would never be possible. Instead he intended to direct her hyper personality to something that would help the clan in more ways than one.
The day was still in it's early stages. Eagleflight wanted to train Soaringpaw for as long as possible, in hopes to spare the other apprentices from another night of difficult sleep. Still, he appreciated the she-cats eagerness to begin. He only hoped it would be that way always, knowing that this might just be because Soaringpaw is a new apprentice.
The Egyptian Mau steadily watched her approach a well-hidden rabbit hole with no intents to stop. It was obvious that she had no knowledge of it and would soon learn her lesson in not paying attention to her surroundings. Eagleflight knew well enough that the trip would only leave her thoroughly sore, which meant the hopeful production of muscles. Sure enough, Soaringpaw went flying into a mound of dirt. As if on cue, a rabbit had appeared in front of her and almost mockingly ran off.
Whiskers twitching, Eagleflight approached his now dirty apprentice. "Well,' he started in a sarcastic tone. "You certainly live up to your prefix, eh?" With a gentle nudge of the paw, the tom looked at her sternly. "Come on then, you'll be fine. That will teach you not to be so ignorant of your surroundings. That will be our first lesson." With the flick of his tail, Eagleflight beckoned Soaringpaw over to the top of the hill. "Stand beside me and look around." he ordered. He would waste no time with silly, unproductive games.

_____________________ Getting her bearings again was something she was having trouble with, as she could have sworn she had seen a rabbit run around her head. Blinking her walnut brown eyes, the orbs stretched wide from her rather recent heart jerking fall, she could make out the small cloud of dirt settling from her fall. She felt a paw prod her pelt, and a lecture reach her ginger colored ears as she moved to get up. Brilliant Soaringpaw already he is lecturing you. It seemed that her mentor had obviously no intention of feeling sorry for her troubles, which sort of sent her brow furrowing in annoyance. Still it was an early day and she could make up for her folly, and the realization of that set her moods up again and had her excited, and her eyes shinning once more.
She bounded up on her paws off the ground at hearing his words about lessons. She had completely of course avoided hearing his mentioning of watching her surroundings as she had previously been trying to lick her big white belly clean. She sat next to him and looked briefly at where he was looking then looked to his face then the land and to his face as if trying to figure out what it was he was starring at. What was it she was supposed to see? Was there something happening downhill? Was the camp being attacked? Scrunching up her face she stood and leaned her head out over the hill more directly trying really hard to focus before sighing and sitting back down with a huff sending a small puff of collected dirt off her coat.
Turning her head around, she noticed a rabbit not too far away, and she glanced up at Eagleflight to see if he noticed her, but decided to move for it anyway. Besides since it was so close she thought she would have no problem catching it with her speed. She was a Windclanner, she could out run a silly rabbit.
Bunching up her paws without any real practiced form, she pushed off her hind paws and leap down the backside of the hills and charged straight for the rabbit. The rabbit's eyes grew wide and hollow at her charge. Of course it noticed her, since it would have been ridiculously hard for it not to. In a rush it dashed off, with her hot on its heels. It must have made for quite a show to see the wily rabbit against a clumsy footed young apprentice.

Eagleflight thought he saw a flash of annoyance in the cats eyes but it was quickly brushed off with a look of excitement. Impressed by her still giddy mood, even after her tumble, the Windclan deputy chuckled. This cat would never cease to amuse him. Soaringpaw was obviously confused at what he was trying to get her to do, as her head whipped between his own face and to what he was looking at, which really was nothing in particular. Eagleflight knew this lesson would not end soon and he quickly appreciated getting an early start. It seemed as if it would be some time before they would even begin the introduction.
Suddenly Eagleflight noticed Soaringpaw's head whip around. Before he could even get a glimpse of what she had seen, Soaringpaw was off. The white and ginger apprentice speedily raced after a rabbit, her movements a bit cluttered compared to a senior warrior. Personally interested to see if a rookie apprentice could catch a clever rabbit, he sat under a path of sun and watched intently at her run. Plus, what good would it have been to both of them to try and stop her? The young cat would learn from her mistakes and that would make her a better warrior in the end. While Soaringpaw was all over the place, her speed was impressive. Close to it's heels, Eagleflight perked his ears in deep interest. If she managed to catch the rabbit, he'd be thoroughly impressed.
The wind blew through the leaves of nearby bushes, murmuring a sweet song into the aged tom's ears. It seemed like only yesterday he was in Soaringpaw's place, all too eager to prove on his first days that he was already a great hunter. He, of course, didn't catch a rabbit until a week into practice. Still, it seemed like such a prize. Eagleflight would swell with as much pride as Soaringpaw when she would catch her first prey.

Rampaging through the clan, because anyone with warrior training would hardly call what she was doing just now anything else, she sprinted like an untrained youth after a much treasured prize. Had this attempt by her been during leafbare, it was unlikely she would have been able to even get near the hare, for her footing was poor, and its was sure and strong. Whiskers twitching in the wind with longing and anticipation of a catch she could already visualize raced in her mind. She let feelings of grandeur spread across her pelt as she imagined her mentor praising her for a fine catch on her first hunt.
This of course was to be short lived, and as the day was already proving to be very dream shattering for her, it would be hard pressed to let her simply have a rabbit. Perhaps it was the will of starclan to teach this apprentice the hard way and not let her excessive energy be her undoing, but for one reason or another she completely missed the gnarled root jutting out from the ground. The rabbit, its tattered golden brown fur just in front of her nose, so close she could taste it, jumped over the root swiftly and with an intent that almost made it look planned. Poor Soaringpaw was too hot on its heels to be able to turn, or jump herself. Her only option would have been to duck, but she was untrained, and her reactions for such things were not very good.
Out of the corner of her eye as she went sailing to the ground for the second time today, she caught her mentor sitting up on the hill watching her. The amount of failure pulling at her, was immense and she felt for the first time ever very foolish. This wasn't like the stories her grand dad had told her. Shroudedsight had never spoken of the complications of hunting rabbits. As she shakily rose to her paws she had an insight. Maybe that's what her mentor was for then? She shuffled her paws while waiting for him to react to her attempt, she honestly hadn't known just how off it was, she only knew she missed the rabbit.

Eagleflight's ear twitched as Soaringpaw hit camp. Still unfazed by anything, Soaringpaw zoomed after the rabbit like a hungry bear. He'd have to talk with her about her behavior soon, but the tom always believed in turning to gentle reprimanding rather than a cold one. Most cats seemed to react and feel better about themselves that way. Plus he had faith in his overly hyper apprentice. While she was much too willing to jump into the action without a game plan, Soaringpaw had great potential as a Windclan cat.
Praying to Starclan the young she-cat wouldn't break her paw on the second day of training, Eagleflight watched with the stare of a hawk. He nearly missed the jutting root that protruded from the uneven grounds. 'There she goes...' Second time in the day, Soaringpaw literally soared as she hit the gnarled danger. Shaking his head, he got up.
Paws shuffling, Soaringpaw looked thoroughly embarrassed. Raising a brow, Eagleflight approached her calmly. Studying her paws and legs for any sign of being broken, he sighed. It looked as if everything was in place. 'Thank Starclan...' Eagleflight was bemused by how sturdy the lithe Windclanner seemed. Still, he would not take chances. "Are you hurt at all?" He lay the tip of his long tail gently on Soaringpaw's shoulder blades and smiled softly. "That was very impressive, Soaringpaw. The clan would be proud of how fast you ran. You would have caught that rabbit had you not been foolish enough to ignore your surroundings."
Standing up, Eagleflight lifted his tail. "That's an important lesson to be learned, young one. There will be plenty of hunting and and fighting practices for you to release all your pent up energy and," Glancing over to Soaringpaw, he continued, "Soon you should be able to catch any rabbit that runs past your paws... without tripping. But enough babbling." He beckoned her back to the top of the hill. "There is a training session to be started and we have yet to even begin."

_____________________ Soaringpaw shuffled her paws vigorously as Eagleflight neared. She was prepared for a speech, prepared for some sort of lecture. She was not however prepared for him asking her if she was alright. Shrugging her muscles she felt out each limb giving herself a through check. Nothing felt out of place, and her body felt tender almost sore, but nothing hurt her. She absentmindedly shook her head no to answer him, and to affirm for herself that she was indeed still in one piece.
Ready to breathe a sigh of relief at the lack of lecture, she held her tounge as he started to speak again. First to her surprise she was praised for her speed and felt her chest swell at that. I'm going to be the fastest runner the clan has ever seen! This time she also heard him speak about watching out for her surroundings. She sheepishly grinned up at him when he said this, because she had indeed learned the hard way that things could get in her way even if they weren't moving.
Abruptly afterwards he turned tail pausing to look back at her, and told her that they were to actually continue and start the lesson at hand. Soaringpaw now renewed with excitement let the questions flow, because if she wasn't supposed to see and chase the rabbit she didn't understand what they were looking for. " But whats the point of standing up there and staring off into space? Its not like prey is going to fall over if we stare at it. Are we watching for danger from other clans?" She followed him back up the hill, with a very questioning look plastered to her face.

As Soarpaw shook her head, Eaglelfight relaxed. "Good, but if at any time you feel a genuine pain anywhere, let me know and you can go to the medicine cat." Her sheepish grin to him telling her to watch her pawsteps had him laugh out loud. Moving steadily back to the top of the hill, he heard Soaringpaw ask inquisitively behind him, "But whats the point of standing up there and staring off into space? Its not like prey is going to fall over if we stare at it. Are we watching for danger from other clans?" Eagleflight yet again took a seat back up on Rabbit Hill and gazed around, then back to her. "We are not staring into space, first of all. We are neither looking for danger, though that's a feasible answer." Shaking his head, Eagleflight turned his gaze to his apprentice.
"I want you to tell me what you hear, feel, and see. And not just in one place, but all around you. Once you've mastered picking out your area, you'll be able to know what's behind you without even needing to see it." It felt almost odd all over again, to be teaching what he once never knew. It had pride swell within, like a kit turning into an apprentice. Or an apprentice turning into a warrior. Eagleflight shuddered slightly, remember his mother almost abruptly. He wondered if she were watching him and at that moment a soft breeze brushed past his fur. She was.
Eagleflight studied Soaringpaw's behaviors. "It is important, as you have learned twice today, to always know what is in front of you whenever you set your paws down. Had that rabbit hole you tripped in gone straight down or been larger, you could have broken your paw. The same applies with the root. An apprentice who can't walk is an apprentice who can't train." he reminded her gently.

_____________________ Looking out over the hillside and staring into the territory again had her confused, but this time she was paying attention to Eagleflight. She was glad that he hadn't avoided answering her questions like she was some pesky kit. Most of the other warriors tried to stay away from her for that reason. They would get tired of her rambling. Its not rambling if those same questions are being answered by my mentor, so I guess that just means that they either didn't know, or just didn't want to talk.
Her golden fur swayed as the gentle tugging of a slight breeze pulled at her pelt. He reminded her about how she could have broken her paw, twice in fact, and this time her expression was not sheepish but serious. He had a point, she had come close to ending her warrior career on her second day out of camp. What would I be if I had broken my paw then? She kept that thought to herself not wanting to know the answer, and not wanting to have a ready alternative to the warrior lifestyle that she was eagerly choosing to devote herself to.
She thought to what he had said about danger still being meaningful. Are we going to do battle training soon? I want to be able to react to danger the right way. That and i'm really getting tired of messing up today.... maybe what he has planned won't be so bad. She tried to stretch out her senses, but this exercise required complete concentration, a lack of tension in her body, clearness of the mind, and to be still, all of which were her achillies heels. Her mind was realing trying to find from here if any Thunderclanners were near the border, trying to hear whether any other apprentices were training nearby, and hearing the whizzing sound of the wind as it rushed past her ears. See the trouble was she was doing what he had asked, but she was uncertain what he was looking for her to say, so instead she blurted out what she thought was a decent enough response. " Well I see clear skies, and I can't hear any danger... or other cats nearby." She looked to him hoping that this was satisfactory. Meanwhile her claws were hooked to the ground trying to keep herself grounded, as she still had to fight the urge to sprint down the hill. The memories of her recent failures being the only thing stoping her.

& what lies lurk in kisses- - - - for that face that launched a thousand ships Eagleflight purred. "Soon, my apprentice. You'll be taught how to fight with all the strength of Windclan soon. However, I need you to pay attention." Windclan let his tail waver in the brushing wind, combing both their fur and the trees around them. The hill was large enough to see nearly all of Windclan's grounds but more specifically the camp. Tiny figures bustled past each other like a large line of working ants, their minds set to complete their objective no matter the distractions/limits. It sort of amused him in one way or another, to think of his clan as ants. However he pushed the humorous thought away, reeling back into reality as Eagleflight's apprentice fidgeted, obviously taking his word and taking note of her surroundings. She stilled, and he could tell that she was doing as told and was going it to the best of her abilities. Eagleflight mentally praised Soaringpaw, relieved to actually get to the lesson.
"Well I see clear skies, and I can't hear any danger... or other cats nearby."
A good start for an apprentice on her first training. "Well done. The skies are clear, but how about the bushes? The trees? How about the sound of the wind?" He didn't want to put her down which wasn't an easy task but still, Soaringpaw may take his corrections the wrong way. The wind grew stronger at his correction and the bushes rustled in rhythm. "Notice how the wind makes the bushes rustle and sway. But-" Eagleflight paused to look at her momentarily. "What if the bushes were moving and making noise but there was no wind? There are many possibilities as to what it could be based on sight and sound. But this is where your nose comes in." Glancing at the sun to check time, they were slightly off-time but that was their punishment for a late start. Still, Soaringpaw had shown great promise with her bountiful energy and willingness, well, sort of willingness, to learn. Eagleflight chuckled quietly. The clan would have their hands full with this rambunctious apprentice. "If it's rabbit, it's a rabbit in the pushes. If it's a cat, identify if it carries our scent or not. All your senses will sharpen with practice and you may one day save our clan from a surprise attack." WORDS 387 TAGGED soaringpaw NOTES ugh, i am so sorry for the short post.
